Teach the Robot to Sense

Discover why robots need sensors to understand the world.

Your robot can move. But there is a problem. It cannot see, measure distance, or know how its wheels have moved.

How can it understand the world? Add sensors one at a time and find out what each one tells the robot.

Stages

    Key ideas

    LiDAR

Measures distances with laser beams: the geometry around the robot.

    Camera

Captures what things look like: colour and appearance.

    Wheel encoders

Count wheel rotation. Combining both wheels gives odometry: an estimate of how the robot has moved.

    About Robot Foundations

Robot Foundations answers one question: how does a robot actually work? Every robot runs the same loop: it senses the world, works out where it is, plans what to do, and controls its motors, many times per second. These three labs build that loop piece by piece, with a simulated robot you drive and program yourself.
